Ultra-high-net-worth individuals and celebrities are no longer satisfied with a five-star suite; they want the entire property to themselves. Ensuring discretion, exclusivity, and a curated experience that feels more like a private estate than a hotel stay is quickly becoming a priority for ultraluxe vacations. For high-profile travellers, privacy isn’t just a preference, it’s a necessity.

A trend report from Capital One Travel found that nearly half of all luxury travellers said privacy was their absolute top priority, while a staggering 86% said privacy and seclusion were among their top considerations when planning a vacation, saying, “The true value of luxury lies in the guarantee of experiences that cannot be accessed by the general public.” Even still, travellers aren’t just looking to hide away. They’re looking for spaces that feel intentional,  are atmospheric and intimate, and that’s where boutique hotels step in.

Boutique hotels offer the kind of character and intimacy that big-name resorts simply can’t replicate, making them the ideal canvas for travellers who want exclusivity without sacrificing style or soul. These properties are intimate by design, often with fewer than 30 rooms. They’re usually independently owned or part of small, design-forward collections, which means they’re free from the cookie-cutter layouts and standardized experiences of typical hotels. Instead, these properties lean into personality: restored heritage buildings with original stonework, contemporary villas with sculptural architecture, or jungle hideaways where every suite feels like a private sanctuary. When UHNW clients buy out the whole property, they transform it into their private playground.

Booking out a boutique hotel also eliminates the risk of paparazzi lurking in the lobby or fellow guests live-streaming their vacation. Staff are dedicated solely to them and operate under strict confidentiality agreements, and with no outsiders present, security teams can lock down the property more effectively. It’s also about personalization, being able to dictate every detail of the environment, from the scent in the lobby to the playlist by the pool. Boutique hotels, with their scale and flexibility, are perfectly suited to this demand.

Celebrities and other affluent clients are driving this shift with specialized luxury travel agencies like Virtuoso, Black Tomato, and Stars Desk. Unlike standard booking platforms, these agencies operate as luxury concierges, curating journeys where comfort, privacy, and access are guaranteed. They manage everything from confidential bookings to last-minute global travel plans, ensuring every detail is handled discreetly. Celebrities and UHNW clients depend on advisors who understand how to move discreetly across borders, navigate global hotspots, and open doors that aren’t listed online.

This trend also reflects a broader cultural shift: privacy has become the ultimate status symbol.  In a world where the most exclusive resorts are filled with influencers documenting every moment of their lives, the ability to disappear into your own sanctuary is priceless, seeking privacy in an age of constant exposure. Luxury travel is no longer about being seen in glamorous places—it’s about not being seen at all.
