Why Couture Clients Are Spending More Than Ever

Written By Ellia Romeiro-Lourenco

Couture products are a status symbol. Their intention is to be a bold statement of luxury and wealth. With younger generations now being the target audience for luxury couture items, there has been an influx in costs, ultra-high-net-worth demands, and increase in private fitting spaces. Although there remains an older clientele for luxury shopping, wealthy millennials and Gen Z’s are finding themselves to be splurging on more elaborate luxury wardrobes that are conversation starters, rather than purchasing a classic demure designer bag.

With the ease and inexpensiveness of fast fashion and online shopping, couture companies have pivoted in a route that is based on exclusivity and costliness to keep their luxury clientele. Couture items are dependent on their scarcity and individuality. Those who purchase luxury goods are motivated by high-end quality, and are more inclined to purchase couture pieces that are limited yet costly, because it is not easily accessible to the general public. Individuality is pushed in the media, that now many are willing to ditch looking at the price tag, and simply purchase couture items because they will be the only ones in the world to own them. There is something satisfying in knowing that your bag is 1 in 5, and that limited quantity of luxury goods is the driving factor in the rise of costs for couture items.

Runways have become especially popular on social media, where younger generations are inclined to purchase ready-to-wear designs that are seen on their feeds. Since 2020, this demand has become increasingly popular among high spenders, where ready-to-wear dresses are consistently being sold between $15,000 and $30,000. Popular millennial and Gen Z influencers gain brand recognition overnight, gaining sponsorships and partnerships with luxury brands that allow for them to showcase their lavish lifestyles. Oftentimes the comment sections are full of questions as to where their garments and accessories are from. But most of the time they are one of a kind pieces that entice internet users with their exclusivity, which brings more attention to Haute-Couture fashion houses. The world of haute-couture is built on selling a fantasy, costly items are in higher demand, and who better to showcase luxurious products than those who are watched worldwide.

In recent years private shopping spaces have correlated with couture clients' spending habits. The foundation for many of these private shopping experiences depends on a relationship between merchandiser and customer. Relying on an invitation, private shopping spaces have a pre-established clientele, generally consisting of the highest spending patrons. Those who are subscribed to this lavish lifestyle are no stranger to a couple more zero’s at the end of the price tag. If you're paying for premium products why not reap the rewards by reveling in an experience that is so unique and tailored to your every needs? These interpersonal shopping spaces are further motivating those with deeper pockets to pay top dollar for their garments/accessories to maintain their connection with their couture provider, and gain access to an immersive personal shopping experience that is limited to the public.
