Wales Bonner Spring/Summer 2026: The New Definition of Modern Luxury
written by luc cormier

Grace Wales Bonner posted her Spring 2027 Menswear lookbook in June. Her collection arrived this way due to preparations for an upcoming Hermès debut in January. The collection is small but mighty and characteristically smart.
The first look in the collection was a navy double-breasted suit. Under the suit was a white button-up with oversized cuffs folded over. The look is extremely minimalistic, but the subtle details are what make it compelling. The origami-like fold of the shirt collar to the subtle flare of the pants. Wales Bonner showed, as she usually does, an attention to detail that goes beyond high-quality textiles and re-used cuts, but new details that blur gender and add a sensitive touch to typically masculine garments.
Look 6 was a simple striped button-up and beige cargos. The focal point was text on the back that reads: “MALAIKA, Moving towards Oneness.” Malaika translates to “angel” or “beautiful girl” in Swahili, an East African language spoken by millions of people in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The choice of words translates as a message of feminine power and cultural unity. The shirt is a perfect example of Wales Bonner’s habit of imbuing her clothing with political commentary, in particular Black issues.

In Look 11, Wales Bonner explores formality via a quarter-zip sweater paired with board shorts and a button-up. Popped collar(s) add a touch of rebellion. The collection was extremely minimal, focusing more on subtle details and unique ways to imbue commentary into clothes that might appear mundane at first glance.

It is her obsession with detail, subversion and culture that makes her so popular among celebrities. She blends her skillset with an immense love for Black identity, which has resulted in various boundary-pushing Black celebrities donning her clothes. In 2025, FKA Twigs wore the label to the Met Gala. The theme was Black Dandyism, which fit perfectly into Wales Bonner’s wheelhouse. Twigs’ look was inspired by Josephine Baker and was unusually pared back for the singer, who usually chooses bold, spiky, futuristic clothing to express herself. For an event so centred around Black identity, she chose subtly and went to a master of that craft.

Steve Lacy wore a look from Wales Bonner’s Spring Summer 2026 collection during his shoot for The Cut earlier this year. His meticulously produced music has perfect synergy with meticulously crafted clothing. Wales Bonner’s work resonates with Black artists who refuse to define themselves by boundaries of genre, formality, gender and race. FKA Twigs and Steve Lacy have experimented with a range of sounds and concepts throughout their careers and are extremely adept at crafting music imbued with profound meaning while remaining accessible for the most part.

In 2024, Solange starred in the campaign for Grace Wales Bonner’s Autumn-Winter Menswear collection. The two women have an innate connection as they navigate luxury, consciousness, intention and Black identity through their work.

Grace Wales Bonner’s past and current work is compelling as a meditative reflection on luxury, sensitivity, race and formality. As she navigates an entirely new level of luxury and visibility at Hermes, it is exciting to see how her thematic and reflective processes will translate to the classic luxury house.
