The New Era of Designer Home Gyms

Written By Mariana Lora

For years, luxury in the home was defined by wine cellars, walk-in closets, and private theatres. Now, the status symbol taking over multimillion-dollar properties is leaning towards the wellness-focused trend of the 2020s: the designer home gym. Across the luxury real estate market, affluent homeowners are transforming spare rooms, basements, and for some entire wings of their homes into curated fitness spaces that rival high-end clubs.

The shift reflects a larger lifestyle movement where health and wellness have become deeply tied to luxury culture. Following the pandemic-era boom of at-home fitness, wealthy consumers no longer see home gyms as practical add-ons but as strong displays of comfort and wealth in an uncertain society.

Affluent consumers are moving away from bulky black equipment in favour of pieces that complement carefully curated interiors. Designers and fitness brands have responded with collections that feature rich natural materials, sculptural silhouettes and refined craftsmanship. Brands such as Kenko offer dumbbells crafted from walnut, maple, brass and stainless steel, transforming traditional weights into decorative objects worthy of display. Similarly, HEFT Designs creates handcrafted strength training equipment with a furniture inspired aesthetic, while Lifted Movement's free weights are designed with clean lines and elevated finishes that blend seamlessly into contemporary living spaces. Rather than being hidden away after a workout, these pieces are intended to remain visible, contributing to the overall atmosphere of the home.

Soft neutral palettes, natural woods, brushed metals and minimalist forms have become defining features of high end fitness spaces, mirroring the design language found throughout the rest of the home. Accessories have also received a luxury makeover. Bala's signature ankle and wrist weights are available in muted, fashion forward colours and streamlined shapes, while Subtle Impacts offers equipment designed to be aesthetically pleasing within sophisticated interiors, the sleek abstract shapes passing for interior decor. For wealthy consumers, the goal is to create a beautiful space that reflects personal style, craftsmanship and a commitment to everyday well being.

The new generation of designer gyms goes far beyond a treadmill in the corner. These spaces often include custom lighting, spa-inspired interiors, cold plunge pools, infrared saunas, recovery lounges, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking private landscapes. Materials like marble, oak paneling, matte black steel, and soft neutral palettes are replacing the industrial look traditionally associated with fitness spaces. The goal is clear: wellness should feel luxurious.

Much of the trend has been driven by high-end fitness brands such as Technogym and Peloton, both of which have helped transform exercise equipment into design pieces. Technogym, in particular, has become a staple in celebrity homes and luxury hotels thanks to its sleek Italian design and integrated digital training systems. Equipment which used to be hidden away for its clunky obtrusive appearance, is being displayed like beautiful furniture.

Another major influence has been celebrity wellness culture. Public figures including fitness fan Khloe Kardashian, Mark Wahlberg with his impressive two story home gym and popular power couple Victoria and David Beckham have shared glimpses of their personal fitness spaces online, fueling demand among affluent consumers. These gyms often include personalized training studios, mirrored Pilates rooms, and recovery technology once found only in professional sports facilities. The line between private residence and luxury wellness retreat continues to blur.

Luxury developers have also taken notice. New high-end condominiums and estates now market wellness amenities as a central selling feature rather than a bonus. In cities like Miami, Dubai, and Los Angeles, elite properties increasingly advertise private yoga studios, meditation spaces, and custom fitness rooms alongside traditional luxury amenities.

The designer home gym ultimately represents more than fitness. It signals a cultural shift where wellness, comfort and peace have become the most powerful examples of luxury. In today’s high-end market, the ultimate flex is not what someone wears or drives but if they can afford to live comfortably.
