Tailored, Again

The carpet was a midnight blue, dotted with white and yellow blooms that night, not red. The star-studded blue carpet in New York City brought forward countless major fashion moments, a select few attendees stood out from the stylish pack.
The best-dressed stars of the night paid close attention to the theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which was the first Costume Institute show ever devoted exclusively to Black designers, drawn from Monica L. Miller’s Slaves to Fashion. The dress code was “Tailored for You.” Unsurprisingly A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Lewis Hamilton each interpreted tailoring in their own original ways, offering a fresh and contemporary approach to suiting. Rocky, for one, like a true Fashion Killa , arrived wearing his own design, inspired by Harlem. Executing a contemporary spin on tailoring, Rocky took a cool, sportswear-minded route that reflected his impeccable personal style, wearing a double-breasted AWGE parka in technical wool, with coated snaps and velcro detailing on the sleeves. The jacket was inspired by the Marmot outerwear Rocky saw being worn in his native Harlem growing up.
Coco Jones arrived in a gorgeous handcrafted Manish Malhotra; a pearl-encrusted cape over a matched pantsuit. This was Malhotra’s debut as a designer and as an attendee at The Met. He was inspired by Harlem and 1930s Zoot suits as they are often characterized by their playful approach to proportions, highlighting high waisted wide leg trousers, long coats, wide lapels, and padded shoulders. Malhotra and his team infused Indian craftsmanship into the used sharply tailored trousers and elongated proportions as the canvas for the design. The design featured more than 200,000 pearls and Swarovski crystals hand-embroidered onto the fabric. The cape of Jones’ look alone took more than six months to embroider.
Several gown and skirt ensembles also deserved best-dressed recognition such as Anne Hathaway's Carolina Herrera blouse paired with a ball gown, a tribute to the legendary André Leon Talley. Cynthia Erivo stunned in a glittering Givenchy jacket and ball skirt combination. Diana Ross, wearing a custom creation by Ugo Mozie, glided up the Met steps in a flowing gown with an 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren. All in all, it stood out as one of the most fashionable and unforgettable Met Gala red carpets ever.
